Day 1: Arrival

Arrive at Kotoka International Airport in Accra, Ghana. You will be met by a tour representative, transferred to your hotel for a welcome drink and orientation. Please note that your room may not be ready if you arrive on a morning flight, as guests may still be checking out.  Overnight in Accra  (DINNER)


Day 2: Accra

This morning, tour of the century old capital of Ghana.

  • Visit to W.E.B. Du Bois Centre for Pan African Culture.
  • Tour Accra’s old colonial section, Jamestown.  View Brazil House, the Ussher and James forts, built by the Dutch (1650) and British (1673) respectively, and the old colonial Lighthouse.
  • Visit the craftsmen at Nungua/Teshie, who make coffins in the shape of everything from vegetables to cameras, aircraft amd giant fish.
  • Visit the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Museum, dedicated to Ghana’s first post-independence President.
  • Head to the Arts and Crafts Market to sample artwork and crafts from across West Africa. Overnight in Accra. (BREAKFAST & LUNCH)


Day 3: Island cruise

Depart Accra for Akosombo port for a cruise on board Dodi Princess II on Lake Volta to Dodi Island. Enjoy the barbeque lunch served on board the boat whilst you dance to highlife music played by a live band. Return to Accra. (BREAKFAST & LUNCH)


Day 4: The Ashanti realm

Fly from Accra to Kumasi, once the seat of the Ashanti Empire.

  • Visit the Royal Manhyia Palace Museum, home and office of former Ashanti kings. The adjacent cultural center features studios of brass makers, potters, drum carvers and batik makers.

Visit the Ashanti craft villages to observe craftsmen at work and barter for their wares:

  • Ahwiaa, where woodcarvers produce Ashanti stools (reserved for kings), fertility dolls & walking sticks.
  • Ntonso, where traditional Ashanti symbology called Adinkra is printed onto cloth with dyes made from tree bark.
  • Bonwire, where world-famous kente cloth is woven.

Return via evening flight to Accra.  (BREAKFAST & LUNCH)


Day 5: A day to relax

Morning at the Legon Botanical Gardens. Take part in a high rope course, fishing or biking at this beautiful green outdoor space.

After lunch, spend the afternoon at Labadi Beach, build sand castles, ride horses, or just chill.

Overnight in Accra. (BREAKFAST & LUNCH)


Day 6: The Doors of No Return

Depart Accra for Cape Coast, home to a pair of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

  • Visit Cape Coast Castle, home of the West African Historical Museum. It was once the largest of the more than 40 so-called “slave castles” built along the West African coast, where African captives were warehoused before being loaded onto ships bound for the Americas.
  • Visit Elmina Castle, the oldest European monument in Ghana and the first European “slave castle.” Lay a wreath at the original “Door of No Return.”
  • Enjoy a short walk around the colorful Elmina fishing harbor to see the traditional dugout canoes of local fishermen.

Return to Accra in the evening. (BREAKFAST & LUNCH)


Day 7: Getaway Day

Spend the day packing or doing your last minute shopping. Check out of your hotel in the early evening and go check in at the airport. Depart Accra on an evening flight, arrive at Washngton-Dulles the following morning.
